Calculate Your Off-Grid Power
November 6, 2025
Boondocking, also known as off-grid camping, is a style of camping that requires no reliance on hookups. You’re completely disconnected from utilities like electricity, water, and sewer, relying instead on your own self-contained systems and supplies. The beauty of boondocking lies in its freedom – access to remote locations, breathtaking scenery, and the opportunity to truly disconnect. However, these freedoms often come with a tinge of anxiety and common questions, such as "What do I need to prepare?" and "How long can my rig last off the grid?"
There’s not one simple answer to those questions, because everyone’s camping style and utility needs are different. Some explorers use more water, some cook more, while others power more gear. You’ll often see varying claims from various manufacturers pertaining to off-grid support. Sometimes a smaller RV promises the same number of “off-grid days” as a larger one with twice the battery capacity. However, few explain how those estimated numbers are actually calculated — that’s what we want to change.
Another factor many travelers also don’t realize is that boondocking is often the only option at an RV-friendly site. In fact, fewer than 25% of campsites in the United States offer electric hookups. Furthermore, that number drops to a mere 2% in National Parks, which are hands-down some of the most popular US locations for on-site camping. Even when available, powered sites can often be expensive, with prices ranging from $30–$45 per night and exceeding $100 during peak season. To that note, rising demand and limited availability can make securing a reservation quite challenging.
With the industry’s first Power Calculator, our team at Evotrex aims to help you understand how your stored power is consumed by breaking it down into key usage categories, resulting in an estimate of your off-grid power usage in kWh (kilowatt-hours). The calculator also factors in your desired trip duration and the weather conditions at your destination, enabling you to plan your adventure using data estimates to choose the proper configuration with confidence.
For our Power Calculator 1.0, we break down off-grid power consumption into five key categories: Appliances, System, HVAC, Kitchen, and Water Heater. Our formula assumes a family of four who cooks, showers, and lives comfortably each day.
You’ll start by selecting your trip duration, season, and weather conditions. From there, the calculator generates an interactive chart that visualizes and quantifies your total power requirements, helping you better understand how that energy is used across all those categories and their functions. Detailed definitions and calculation formulas are available in the information window –You simply click the info icon to learn more.
When it comes to power usage, our approach has never been to make bold or "industry-leading" marketing claims based on “survival mode” calculations. That's misleading our explorers. Instead, we remain focused on real-world living and designing a tech-forward RV that will allow you to boondock confidently for days while using power as comfortably as you would at home.
We want to point out that this is merely the beginning. Our team is already hard at work on a more comprehensive “Off-Grid Calculator”, which also factors in water usage. It will be introduced alongside the debut of our flagship RV trailer at CES 2026 in Las Vegas on January 6th, paired with an online debut at www.evotrex.com.
